Regional Performance Centre impresses at Butterdome Cup
(January 13, 2014)
(Written by FC Edmonton)
Competition for the Regional Performance Centre is hard to come by in both Edmonton and Calgary, which is why most of the games the girls have played in the last few months have been against each other. This weekend in the Butterdome Cup, North and South RPC players had the chance to play together for the first time against University competition.
“I really like playing with the North,” said RPC south player Sarah Kinzner. “Bringing in all the top girls from across Alberta and playing with them is a great environment to be a part of.”
The ladies started off the tournament against 2013 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national champions MacEwan University Griffins. Twelve minutes in, they found themselves down 1-0, but the girls continued to play well finishing off the half. Just after the restart, Camilla Shymka made a run down to the goal-line on the near side and beat the ‘keeper at the post to bring RPC level at 1-1. The Griffins earned themselves another goal after a corner kick, and RPC were unable to come back for the draw and the game finishing 2-1.
The second game of the showcase was against the CIS bronze medalists University of Alberta. At the eight minute mark, RPC once again found themselves down a goal, but only six minutes later, were able to pull one back through Colby Knibbs. The U of A went ahead 2-1 in the second half after a dubious penalty call, but RPC found an answer when Shymka scored her second goal of the tournament to draw it 2-2. The game finished in a draw, so both teams lined up for a shoot-out where the U of A took the spoils after a 5-4 result.
“I thought the girls were excellent,” said RPC head coach North Sergio Teixeira after the match. “They played against a very good side and dictated the game. Everything they did was top notch.”
Looking to continue their run of good form, RPC next took on University of Northern BC. For the third game in a row, the ladies went down a goal early in the first half, but pulled one back just after the second half whistle thanks to midfielder Sarah Kinzner. They had the opportunity to pull ahead less than 10 minutes later, but Knibbs header off a corner was well saved by the ‘keeper. With the final score ending 1-1, the side got ready for their second shoot-out of the day, and unfortunately lost 7-6.
For the final game of the showcase, it was time for RPC to shine. For the first time all weekend, RPC started off the scoring in the second minute thanks to Amy Gartke with a high ball that drifted over the ‘keeper and into the top corner. In the 20th minute, RPC doubled their lead with another lofting ball sent in by Yazmine Hall that found the back of the net. Heading in the second half, the team didn’t look back. The side found four more goals (Shymka, Hall, Gabby Short x2) to earn their first win of the weekend 6-0.
“This game really gave us the opportunity to get forward more,” said Gartke, who captained the team most of the weekend. “Some parts were challenging, but it gave us all the chance to work on our technique and improve as players.”
Despite only the one win over the weekend, the ladies played every game with the same high energy and competitiveness that pressured any opposition they came up against. For all that watched the games, they certainly won over some fans and impressed with their technical ability on and off the ball.
